Dark and Deadly: Fave Reads September 17

By October 27, 2017November 16th, 2018Recommended Reads

I started writing a new series in September in an Omegaverse world (more to come on that!) and shuffled things around a bit in my writing and publication plan. So I could only read a few books in September because I have to put reading on hold completely while I’m first drafting.

But, I really loved most of the books I read in September, so read on!

1 – Top September Read

The Filthy Series: The Complete Dark Erotic Serial Novel 1 – 6 (Dark Romance)

She runs from darkness
Into more of the same.
She runs to darkness,
She can never stay away.
Faye Turner is a nineteen-year-old homeless prostitute addicted to cocaine.
Her life is simple, bouncing from one high to the next, bent over greasy truck seats for faceless men. But everything changes when Rhett Hale comes back into her life. Her devilishly handsome step-brother brings life-changing news and a special kind of hate reserved only for Faye. But all the hate in the world can’t hide Rhett’s lust for her.
He wants something wild. Something filthy.
And Faye is tempted to give him just that.
But nothing is simple. Rhett isn’t the only part of her past that comes back.
Faye can’t run.
She can’t hide.
She becomes twined up in the razor sharp lies she fought so hard to get away from.
But lies only bloody the path to the truth.

Phew, this was DARK! I expected it, but that didn’t make it any easier. There are taboo themes and abuse throughout. The heroine seems like an unsympathetic character at first, but once you get further into the story there is SO MUCH that you learn about her character. It was great to see her development as time went on and I really felt like she was real. She had flaws, she made mistakes, she was triumphant at times, she was sometimes annoying and sometimes bitchy and very strong to the outside world, but at her deepest core, she was vulnerable and broken. I think it’s rare to find that. And her relationship with the hero in the story evolved and changed in the most interesting ways. I found it difficult to put this one down. Many difficult and disturbing things happen, both in the timeline of the story and in the characters’ pasts, but I feel like it was handled well and wrapped up in a very satisfying way.

So if you’re looking for a dark, disturbing read, this one is highly recommended from me.

Under Locke by Mariana Zapata (Contemporary Romance)

He was my boss, my brother’s friend, a Widower, an ex-felon, and a man I’d seen casually with a handful of women. But he was everything that gripped me, both the good and the bad. Worst case scenario if things turned awkward between us, I could go somewhere else. I’d gotten over epic heartbreak before, one more wouldn’t kill me.
After moving to Austin following six months of unemployment back home, Iris Taylor knows she should be glad to have landed a job so quickly… even if the business is owned by a member of the same motorcycle club her estranged father used to belong to. Except Dex Locke might just be the biggest jerk she’s ever met. He’s rude, impatient and doesn’t know how to tell time.
And the last thing they ever expected was each other.
But it was either the strip club or the tattoo shop.
… she should have chosen the strip club.

This is my favorite Mariana Zapata book. I LOVED the slow burn and the utter possessiveness and jealousy of the hero, especially since the heroine was simply clueless. It was so GOOD! The story shifted a little from their relationship to other external events later in the book, which made it feel like it dragged it a little, but this was still a great read. Loved it.

3

Alpha Series by Nora Ash (Dark Sci-fi Romance/Omegaverse)

I never thought being saved from pain, degradation and death could come at such a twisted price.
He is nightmares made flesh, the living embodiment of everything I fear. Yet in my darkest hour, he is the one who comes for me.
If he demands my submission in return, how can I deny him?

So I decided to write my own Omegaverse world and went on a rampage looking for some more Omegaverse stories to read as research. I found this delightful series of novellas by Nora Ash. It’s pretty dark but the world unfolds more the more you read. I would say you’ve got to read all three books, since its an overarching story, but it is an intriguing tale with a great hero. I really enjoyed it and definitely recommend it.
